My research investigates the basis of selective vulnerability of spinal motor neurons relative to other neuronal subtypes in motor neuron diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). In the process, I aim to develop novel methods for directing and monitoring the differentiation of different types of neurons from human pluripotent stem cells in a reproducible manner. Ultimately, my goal is to identify molecular processes that drive and/or slow the progression of motor neuron diseases in humans.
